Whatman® Qualitative Filter Papers are available in a variety of grades, sizes, and shapes.

Grade 1: the most popular filter paper, available in circles from 1.0cm to 50cm, and sheets as large as 58.0cm x 68.0cm. Grade 1 exhibits medium retention and flow rate. Pore size: 11µm.

Grade 2: is slightly more retentive then Grade 1, with a corresponding increase in filtration time, due to a pore size of 8µm.

Grade 3: (6µm) has double the thickness of No. 1 with excellent loading capacity; more precipitate can be held without clogging. The extra thickness gives increased wet strength and makes this grade highly suitable for use in Büchner funnels. The high absorbency is particularly valuable when the paper is used as a sample carrier.

Grade 4: (20-25µm) provides extremely fast filtering with excellent retention of coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates such as ferric hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. Grade 4 is very useful as a rapid filter for routine cleanup of biological fluids or organic extracts during analysis.

Grade 5: (2.5µm) provides the maximum degree of fine particle filtration in the qualitative range. Capable of retaining the fine precipitates encountered in chemical analysis. Slow flow rate. Excellent clarifying filter for cloudy suspensions and for water and soil analysis.

Grade 6: (3µm) is twice as fast as No. 5 with almost as fine particle retention. Often specified for boiler water analysis applications.

Multiple Options

The industry standard for high-purity filtration. There are a variety of smooth-surface papers for every need. All are high quality, ashless, and offer excellent wet strength.

Grade 40: is a general-purpose filter which offers medium-speed filtration and retention. (8µm)
Grade 41: is the fastest ashless paper; and used for analytical procedures involving coarse particulates. (20-25µm)
Grade 42: has extremely fine particle retention and is for gravimetric analysis and very fine precipitates. (2.5µm)
Grade 43: is a moderately fast filter for foodstuff and soil analysis, particle collection in air pollution monitoring and inorganic analysis. (16µm)
Grade 44: gives the lowest ash weight for any disc size and has a higher flow rate but is slightly less efficient than Grade 42. (3.0µm)
Grade 541: is a general-purpose hardened ashless paper, with medium retention and flow rates; it is also resistant to acids and bases. (20-25µm)
